THE SUMMERLAND STORY

Hailing from the Gold Coast and Brisbane, Australia, Summerland Records is the brainchild of Lucas Stone and Rick Trewavas; both musicians, both absolute disciples of the riff and good times.

And it’s this everlasting quest for both still clearly on display should you ever find yourself being mowed down by a live performance of their rock’n’roll V8 in the form of Australia’s favourite riff-smugglers, HAMMERS. 15 years since they first stacked into each other, aside from a few wrinkles, grey hairs and a schooner full o’ wisdom, the boys’ quest for the best of times still lives on.

Summerland Records originally kicked off as a backyard DIY record label circa 2010 in a Gold Coast bachelor-come-party pad in the Broadbeach Waters back street of Summerland Key. The two lads, along with housemates Cory Absell (KING MUNG, ELECTRIC HORSE), Ryan ‘Ruckus’ Lucas (HAMMERS, HELM) and Stone’s little brother Toby ‘Big Box’ Mick, concocted punk rock plans over acoustic jams and backyard barbies. This rock’n’roll haven became the stuff of legends among the local scene. The same couldn’t be said about the long-suffering neighbours, forced to endure the noisiest weekend benders on the coast; Summerland (as it was affectionately known) welcomed every local ratbag worth their salt to this poor, unsuspecting street.

Ironically amid the chaos, and off the back of the success of Gold Coast post rock icons HELM, this period would see the boys manage, run events and distribute music internationally for not only HELM but artists including AVERSIONS CROWN, WIDOW THE SEA, ELECTRIC HORSE, THESE FOUR WALLS, TYRANTS and more. These galvanizing years built Trewavas and Stone’s reputation as two productive, progressive and decent men in the unforgiving and unregulated landscape that is independent music.

The pair knew what they wanted to deliver and the road they wished to travel from the very beginning - but sometimes getting there requires a few twists and turns. Life. Sadly, growing pains forced the good times to slow down, and following career changes, fatherhood, interstate moves and a few new maturity cards being dealt among all the lads, Summerland Records would be shelved for another day in a different time.

Fast-forward to 2023, and that day is now, over a decade later. The rock’n’roll fire rages on, with the lads busier than ever steering the runaway locomotive that is HAMMERS, among other music and business projects. Like a pair of ugly rock’n’roll Jesus twins, Summerland Records has been resurrected, wiser and sexier than ever.

The mission? To keep the spirit of music exactly where it should be: in your hands, close by and in its highest quality form.
Releases. Tours. Events. Guidance. All under the blazing Australian sun.

The boys kicked off the 2023 resurrection in stellar fashion, dragging North Carolina’s HE IS LEGEND over for a national Aussie tour with HAMMERS. The riffs flowed thick and fast on the six-date lap of the country, and was a goddamn rager from start to finish. The perfect way relaunch a label destined for its time in the sun.
